Poutine

We've got poutine on the Frysmith truck this week (or until it runs out)! Over the months we've been open, we've gotten tons of requests for this gravy-laden Canadian favorite.
The hang-up's been the difficulty to find a good fresh white cheddar cheese curd at a reasonable price. We finally found 'em at Idaho's Ballard Family Farm. Our poutine's made with their curds and a tasty gravy flavored with porcini mushrooms for a little extra umami oomph.
Update: We're out of cheese curds, but we've placed an order that should come in late this week. Debating adding poutine as a menu staple. What do you guys think?

Mark your calendars, because one week from now we and a few of our fellow truckers will park it at the Americana at Brand for a Street Feast. In addition Grilled Cheese, Dosa, Willoughby Rd., Buttermilk, Coolhaas, Komodo, Mandoline Grill and Dimsum, the restaurants at Americana will be out serving up wine, cocktails, BBQ and tacos!

Drinks that Pass the Swishy Test

We've got a few new drinks going on the Frysmith truck!
Squamscot Sarsaparilla is right down the middle of the various sarsaparillas we tried. It's balanced and bright and tastes good with our chili. It definitely passed my informal, weirdo method of initial taste testing. I put some chili in my mouth, then a swig of soda and swish it around. If it actually tastes good (and usually it's gross), then I'm on to something.Empire Cola has a great dark cola flavor and lots of depth. It's a bit on the sweet side, but I think that makes it go really well with the Kimchi fries.
We're carrying Noah's Water from California now, too. Unlike the Santa Lucia we were stocking, it's pretty local. Brook thought it would be more environmentally friendly to not buy water shipped all the way from Italy.

Jonah Ray's MELTDOWN March 19th

We'll be at Meltdown Comics this Friday, for Jonah Ray's Meltdown. To be honest, I'm not too hip on the comedy scene (actually, I know nothing whatsover), but I did take away that the beer will be flowing free! Stop by for some comedy, fries and, of course, beer this Friday. We'll be there around 7p!

Happy St. Patty's Day!

It's St. Patty's Day! We'll won't be serving green beer, but we will throw a corned beef & cabbage special on the menu. Traditionally, Irish folks feasted on pork belly and cabbage, but when they came to America they found out about corned beef. Obviously, it was a hit! Since we serve pork belly all the time in our kimchi fries, we decided to go the Irish-American route with corned beef and cabbage braised with chipotle and mustard. Come by Liquid Kitty tonight to try it out, along with some Irish drinks!

Premiere of "One Two Many Mornings"

Tuesday night, we're heading back to the Downtown Independent theater for the premiere of "One Two Many Mornings" an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2010. The show begins at 8p (and tickets are only $7), so show up early, get some fries and enjoy music DJ'd by Ryan Wilson of the band Division Day. After the show, filmmaker John August will host a Q&A will the filmmakers.

Here's a little blurb about the movie:
Peter has just run away from his girlfriend of 5 years, seeking solace in his estranged friend from high school, Fischer.

Fischer lives in a church, for free, in exchange for turning off the lights and locking the doors. It’s a good fit for him – he doesn’t really have any aspirations beyond that. As Fischer tries to help Peter recover, Peter quickly learns that Fischer has much more serious problems of his own.

ONE TOO MANY MORNINGS is a coming of age comedy about how running away from your problems can cause you to smack headfirst into someone else’s.

Thank You Fellow Food Truckers

Yesterday's Artcycle was very laid back --no crowds, no long lines, no headaches -- so we had plenty of time to do one of my favorite things: chat it up with our fellow food truckers! No one else can truly understand the long hours and tough work that goes into running a mobile eatery, so the camaraderie is wonderful.

Right next to us at the event were Vince of Vesuvio, who gave me the lowdown on their savory (and labor-intensive) arancini (i.e., rice balls). Knowing how much work goes into those molten cheese-filled nuggets makes me appreciate them even more! Also nearby were the always friendly YL and Chrissy of Kabob N Roll, serving up their fresh hummus and other Mediterranean yummies.

Other fun-to-yak-with-folks included Gabe of The Flying Pig with his foodie crew, Sumant of India Jones truck, Leena with the Dosa Truck and Alex of the Dim Sum truck. I also ran into Josh of the Greasy Wiener, a new truck that deep fries their dogs (they have a great snap to them... and we love anything fried)! Gigi and Ryan of Buttermilk couldn't bring their truck out, but they came by anyway to get some grub and visit. Expect a co-event with both of us in early April!

Later in the evening we headed south and chatted it up with the congenial Chris of the Slice Truck. He's a great guy and makes one saucy thin crust! We also met the crew of The Patty Wagon. We love meeting other business owners who care about how food is raised. Matt and Jeff source the beef for their mini burgers from Idaho where the cattle graze on grass -- you can taste it!

Our hero of the day, however, was Max with the Tasty Meat truck (see the picture link to their robot event above). I didn't listen to my pop's advice about getting new batteries (all this truck maintenance stuff adds up!), and our truck wouldn't start during staging. Max was there in a second with some jumper cables, figuring out how to jump-start our dual-battery diesel. You're my hero, Max (and thanks for the extra forks)!

Looking for an extra Zach

We're expanding our hours as the weather heats up, so just us and a couple of our friends working on the truck isn't hacking it any more. What we really need is another Zach.

Zach:
has a flexible schedule
can lift 50lb. bags of potatoes
has a great sense of humor
knows how to prep food

If you think you fit the above description, let us know. Send a note and a resume to brook@eatfrysmith.com.

Who doesn't love the Dude? Check it out tonight at Gallery 1988.
